PADI Assistant Instructor Course Outline
This is the second Membership/Professional Level in the PADI System. The Assistant Instructor certification allows you to assist in teaching PADI courses, plan and guide dives for certified divers, and independently conduct several experience programs in the PADI system. With your second “Black” C-Card you are more employable in the diving industry. Move on to become an Open Water Instructor, and beyond.
Minimum Age: 18yrs.
Prerequisite:
Age requirement and medical evaluation – a Physician’s Medical Clearance to Dive must be conducted within 12 months prior to start of course. The Student may not be the signing Physician. Paperwork can be completed in advance or at course registration.
PADI Divemaster certification, or an equivalent leadership level rating from another diving organization is required for this course. The candidate must have 60 logged dives to begin the course and successfully complete a knowledge and skill Pre-assessment. This pre-assessment. Includes the Instructor pre-assessment. Exams in the following areas, the candidate must achieve 75% in each subject to pass:
1: Physics
2: Physiology
3: Equipment
4: Skills and the Environment
5: RDP Table and the Wheel
6: PADI Skill Evaluation in confined water, where the candidate demonstrates 18 skills, with no score less than a 3.0 out of a possible 5.0.
7: If not a PADI Divemaster, successfully complete the PADI Divemaster course rescue skills assessment.
Emergency First Response course, or equivalent including basic first aid and CPR techniques, is an entry requirement for this course; training must be current (within two years).
A Learning Agreement must be reviewed and signed in addition to course paperwork. Once registered, any session the student misses must be made up at an extra charge or during the next regular course schedule, or forfeit remaining course fees. As some parts of this course will involve working with Students in other courses, it is essential that the Divemaster candidates are strongly committed to the schedule and workload involved with this course.
Course outline:
Course includes all materials. It is highly recommended that students own all of their own equipment, as familiarity with personal gear improves general diving skills. In addition to SCUBA equipment a knife, depth gauge, compass, timing device, tables and whistle/surface signaling device are all required for this course. The PADI Assistant Instructor Course consists of three modules.

MODULE 1
The academic training consists of seven presentations, which are designed to provide assistant instructor candidates with the knowledge necessary to fulfill their duties. The seven required presentations are:

3: Effective Academic Teaching Presentations – Parts 1 and 2
4: How to Organize and Conduct PADI Experience Programs
5: How to Organize and Conduct the PADI Peak Performance Buoyancy Specialty Diver Course
6: Teaching in Confined Water – Part 2
7: Conducting Open Water Training Dives – Part 1
MODULE 2
The independent study consists of two areas:
1: Knowledge Reviews
2: Assistant Instructor Standards Exam Knowledge Reviews
They provide an organized study method, which allows for self paced learning. The candidates must complete the following ten knowledge reviews:
1: Individualized and Programmed Instruction
2: Experience Program Standards
3: Peak Performance Buoyancy Specialty Diver Course Standards
4: Confined Water Standards and Management
5: Open Water Training Dive Standards
6: The Dive Industry and PADI
7: General Standards and Procedures
8: The Business of Diving
9: Legal Responsibility and Risk Management
10: The Recreational Dive Planner Background and Use
Assistant Instructor Standards Exam – It is designed to test the candidate’s ability to reference standards in the PADI Instructor Manual and apply those standards to teaching situations. The candidate must achieve 75% to pass.
MODULE 3
The Practical Application exercises enable the candidates to gain teaching experience. There are two options:
1: Role Playing Exercises
2: Internship
Role Playing Exercises-These consist of eight candidate teaching presentation exercises that allow candidates to continually improve their presentations and develop practical teaching techniques. The required presentations include:
1: One academic microteaching presentation from the Open Water Diver Course.
2: One academic microteaching presentation from the Peak Performance Buoyancy Specialty Diver Course.
3: One academic microteaching presentation from a continuing education course – Advanced Open Water, Specialty, Rescue or Divemaster.
4: One academic subtopic or complete module/class session from either the Open Water Diver, Advanced Open Water, Rescue or Divemaster course.
5: One confined water teaching presentation from the Open Water Diver course.
6: One confined water teaching presentation from the Skin Diver course.
7: One open water teaching presentation from the Open Water Diver course.
8: One open water teaching presentation from the Peak Performance Buoyancy Specialty Diver course.
Internship – This requires that the candidates assist with three certification courses and give teaching presentations to students during those courses. This enables the candidates to gain practical teaching experience by working with students in PADI courses.
Internship requirements include:
1: Assist with three complete certification courses, attending all academic, confined water and open water training sessions.
2: During a PADI Open Water Diver course:
a) Present one academic microteaching presentation.
b) Present one academic subtopic or complete module.
c) Present two confined water-teaching presentations.
d) Present one open water teaching presentation.
3: During a Peak Performance Buoyancy Specialty Diver course:
a) Review the knowledge reviews with students – clarifying information and answering students questions.
b) Present an open water teaching presentation for one or more skills.
4: During a continuing education course, present one academic microteaching or subtopic presentation.
